My husband, John, and I love to go into the hills surrounding our home and visit caves, springs and hiking trails. This is from a trip to Cave Springs where a spring bubbles out of the shallow cave in a rock cliff. Earlier people from this area had built a retaining wall which held the water back to make a deeper pool which they used for swimming and possibly to power a water wheel. If there was a wheel, it is long gone but the pool is still there and the water splashes over the wall and into a spring branch which then runs into Current River a few hundred yards away. The water is very cold and perfectly clear. The rocks on the bottom can be clearly seen. Mosses and watercress grow along the edges. The area is cooled by the spring which is reached by a long pathway into the woods. Such a glorious place! I loved painting this memory!
